KIT for  12th scale Sewing Machine

The painted sewing machine is an example of what the kit will look like when painted.

I was brought up with a sewing machine - my first one not too disimilar to this one. I was about 7 and living in Norfolk. I remember thinking what fun it was  spinning the wheel as fast as I could only to end up crushing my finger in the spoke!

The sewing machine is very easy to assemble. It has a little spool winding addition which you glue to the front of the machine. I have to admit the machine is not exactly the same as the original. Any machinists will instantly recognise the flaws! If you want to add a spool of cotton thread to the top you would need to glue it on or you could drill and small hole in the metal and glue in a small pin.

The machine is cast with a little machine foot and needle - some of the images are missing them as I was a little heavy handed with my file.

Size:

Approx. 26mm high x 40mm long x 20mm deep

The kit is in the following sections:

  • The main body
  • Winding addition
  • Round wheel handle (which is where I trapped my finger!!)

How to assemble

As with all kits remove the METAL flashing and the casting spurs using snips, files or brushes.

How to paint

I recommend priming the item before painting it.  This ensures your paint finish will be less likely to scratch off the metal pewter.

The traditional look is black with gold highlights and pattern and the mechanical parts are silver but to be honest you can be as creative as you like - bright pink with yellow spots if the mood takes you there!!

TOP TIP - to age black use a white and grey chalk wax or paint - paint on thinly and then wipe off.

If you want parts of the machine to look like aged metal then before priming and painting simply dip it into a diluted solution of steel metal aging solution  - remove it and watch the colour change. To stop it wipe it off or dip into water. If you dont dilute the solution the pewter will turn black which might be perfect for the main body but not so nice if you want a contrasting wheel and spool winder. If you leave the solution a little longer it will create rust - you can watch it happening!! literally takes a minute or two.
